Ayurveda : Science of Life System of medicine with historical roots in the Indian Subcontinent. A type of alternative medicine. According to Bhagavata Purana, Lord Dhanvantari revealed Ayurveda to the world. Some medicinal plant names from the Atharvaveda and other Vedas can be found in subsequent Ayurveda literature. Ancient Ayurvedic treatises also taught surgical techniques, including rhinoplasty, perineal lithotomy, the suturing of wounds, and the extraction of foreign objects.

Lord Dhanvantari

Sushruta Father of Surgery. Author of Sushruta Samhita. The Sushruta Samhita, in its extant form, in 184 chapters contains descriptions of 1,120 illnesses, 700 medicinal plants, 64 preparations from mineral sources and 57 preparations based on animal sources. The book discusses surgical techniques of making incisions, probing, extraction of foreign bodies, tooth extraction, trocars for draining abscess etc. The book also discusses fractures, types of bones, cataract surgery. He also discussed about Anesthesia.

Sushruta

Eight components of Ayurveda Kāyacikitsā: General medicine, medicine of the body Kaumāra-bh ṛ tya: The treatment of children, pediatrics Śalyatantra: Surgical techniques and the extraction of foreign objects Śālākyatantra: Treatment of ailments affecting ENT Bhūtavidyā: People whose minds are affected. Vishatantra: Toxicology Rasāyanatantra: Tonics for increasing lifespan, intellect and strength V ā j ī kara ṇ atantra: Treating male.

Charaka Father of Medicine. He is famous for authoring the medical treatise the Charaka Samhita. He proposed life may be prolonged by human effort and attention to lifestyle. Charaka is generally considered as the first physician to present the concept of digestion, metabolism & immunity. He stressed, illness is caused when the balance among the three doshas in a human body are disturbed. Charaka studied the anatomy of the human body and various organs.
