The Cross Party Group on Accident Prevention and Safety Awareness Twelfth Meeting: Wednesday 20th January 2016 Annual General Meeting Survey responses Summary (Response rate: 16%)

A. The CPG has been productive during the time I have been an attendee 8% 40% 52%

B. Tell us why you chose that score? The topics have been varied, informative, well presented and interesting It has been very beneficial having the weight of the Scottish Parliament behind us The CPG has been an ideal way to meet like-minded safety professionals, share information, highlight research and to both give and receive updates The group is proactive and ensures that key messages are disseminated to a wide audience. Constructive feedback: Interesting and informative but not necessarily productive Suggest that more voting/agreement by the group on motions to be passed should be decided upon at the meetings

C. I felt I had the opportunity to participate in meetings 32%

D. The Speakers/topics were of interest 32%

E. The speakers/topics most interest to me were: The Big Book of Accident Prevention Professor Andrew Watterson Safety for Older people Graduated Driver Licence Risk reduction in safety The Road Safety Framework Helicopter safety Home Safety Unintentional admissions and attendances at hospital Occupational cancer risks Landlord safety Liquid laundry capsules Occupational safety Water safety Fire safety

F. I benefited from learning new information by attending these meetings 52% 48%

4% 60%

8%

I. I Did the following differently after attending these meetings Increased safety awareness about relevant safety issues Sharing discussions and findings with colleagues Acting with more conviction Discussing more openly the health and safety issues faced by society and other organisations in Scotland with colleagues and external stakeholders Consulting and seeking advice more at a National level when proposing safety interventions Bench-marking with like minded partners more than before Changed approach to tackling problems and contacting fellow members for advice and help. Including data discussed at CPG in presentations and papers Reviewed the private landlord fire detection provision

12% 88%

K. If I Hadn’t attended these meetings the following would not have happened: SGN spent a week at the Parliament promoting gas safety, carbon monoxide awareness and social responsibility practices Development of new ideas such as ‘Smart Signs’ (A Coastguard registered, uniformed approach to the design of all UK safety signage-with each sign carrying a unique location- identifying number, a grid reference and a smart phone QR code giving the first responder access to emergency first aid advice) Water Safety Scotland would not have managed to get started or be where it is now CPG meetings allowed stakeholders to help RoSPA produce the Big Book of Accident Prevention

L. The most important benefit of having a CPG on Accident Prevention and Safety Awareness has been: Knowledge sharing and networking Raising important health and safety matters at a national level Direct access to hear and question MSPs on accidental injuries Identifying new issues and working together to find solutions MSP involvement has resulted in issues highlighted during meetings being brought forward in the Scottish Parliament and with the Scottish Government

M. Any other comments? Excellent organisation/facilitation of the CPG Unique Group that must be continued Profile of injury prevention has been raised in Scotland Areas for improvement: Timings Small screens Availability of presentations

Workshops Discussions Small groups Discuss – 1.Anything missing from responses? – 2.How can the Group become more productive? – 3.How can information be shared externally to our organisations? – 4.What will be the most important aims/objectives/tasks if Group is re- established?
