What Is Virtual Simulation? Fully Immersive Graphics and Technology: The Dismounted Soldier Training System uses CryENGINE® to provides:CryENGINE®  a fully immersive environment  photorealistic graphics  technology that enable soldiers to virtually interact with their physical environment  to use combat equipment such as:  Weapons  Scopes  Munitions  perform complex motion maneuvers such as:  leaning around or under an obstacle  arm and hand signals to communicate with others. (Intelligent Decisions, 2012) Military Virtual Simulation Training, Jaime Befus2

Features  360° Surround Sound  Avatars  Immediate Performance Feedback Military Virtual Simulation Training, Jaime Befus3

360° Surround Sound Complete and total surround sound fully engulfs the soldiers into their simulated environment. This surround sound also replicates sounds to certain parameters such as distance, time of day, and battle noises through advanced digital processing effects. Military Virtual Simulation Training, Jaime Befus4

Avatars The avatars within the program are designed to reflect the soldiers’ exact being, from their own personal appearance to their level of physical fitness. This is important in the sense that it will not release soldiers into real time combat thinking they have “superhuman abilities” usually accustom to other war video games, such as Call Of Duty. Injuries to their avatars can be sustained from fire or indirect fire, such as explosives, the same way they would be to a human soldier. Military Virtual Simulation Training, Jaime Befus5

Immediate Performance Feedback After a simulated mission is performed, the After Action Review (AAR) all data during the training simulation such as tactical voice and radio communications, movement techniques, weapons positions, critical events, and engagements is accessed by a facilitator in order to determine any deficiencies in meeting the mission objectives. (Strickland) Military Virtual Simulation Training, Jaime Befus6

Benefits of Virtual Simulation Military Virtual Simulation Training, Jaime Befus7  Cost Effective  Although the price of this new technology may be steep, it is believed to actually be more cost effective in the long run as opposed to live munitions training. The logic: the technology only has to be purchased once as ammunition cannot be reused, so it must constantly be repurchased.  Reduction of Injuries Sustained  Since soldiers are now off the training field, they are no longer exposed to live munitions that always pose the threat of accidental training injuries. With virtual simulation, the only injuries sustained would be to their avatars, in which case the After Action Review would report the data depicting what went wrong during that mission sequence.
