Plot Structure Narrative hook

STEP 1: GROUP LEADER job: review over each slide in the power point carefully by reading them out loud with your group members. GROUP MEMBER job: pay attention and follow along! If you do not understand something, raise your hand and your group leader will STOP and review over the confusing material with the group.

Now let’s begin….. (go on to the next slide) 

EXPOSITION (“to expose / explain”) Introduces the characters, the setting, and the basic situation.   An example we all know…Cinderella! We meet Cinderella, her father, her stepmother, and the stepsisters.  The story takes place in a lovely kingdom far far away, primarily in Cinderella’s family home. Do YOU remember the basic situation?

NARRATIVE HOOK The point where the author captures the audience’s attention/interest in the story Author “HOOKS” the reader!

RISING ACTION (struggle/conflict) Introduces and develops the central conflict.   1- Cinderella wants to go to the ball, but her stepmother prevents her from going.  2- However, her fairy godmother appears and magically creates a gorgeous gown, a carriage, and servants.  3- Cinderella must return by midnight, though, or the beautiful items her fairy godmother has given her will be transformed back to their original state.

CLIMAX (or Turning Point) The highest point of interest or suspense.   Cinderella dances with Prince Charming at the ball, and he falls in love with her.  As the clock strikes midnight, Cinderella runs away and leaves only her glass slipper!

FALLING ACTION Leads to the resolution of the conflict. (These events happen as a result of the Climax!) 1- Prince Charming searches for Cinderella.  2- Many girls try to fit their feet into the glass slipper, but all fail.

RESOLUTION / Denouement (How is it RESOLVED?) The end of the central conflict. Cinderella finally fits the glass slipper onto her foot.  Prince Charming and she get married and live happily ever after.

Characters Protagonist—Main character Antagonist—Character(s) in conflict with protagonist The protagonist is NOT necessarily the “good guy.”

Conflict Conflict is the dramatic struggle between two forces in a story. Without conflict, there is no plot.

Types of Conflict Interpersonal Conflict 1-Human vs Human 2-Human vs Nature 3-Human vs Society 4-Human vs Self Internal Conflict

Theme The “message” of the short story
