Risk Communication Course Module 2: Integrating Risk Communication within Incident Command Systems (ICS) Prezi

Title/Heading ContentPrezi Design Ideas/Format

Learning Objectives Identify where to get more specific training on the role of the PIO in an incident command/unified command system Explain the roles and responsibilities of the PIO during a disaster or public health emergency Describe how the role of the health department spokesperson and the incident PIO are different Identify where in the incident command/unified command structure the PIO function is located. Describe the types of information mid- level public health works could be expected to prepare for use by the PIO during a public health emergency. Framed Zoomed in on objectives as a group. Zoom out to larger group with arrows going from this frame to the next four circle frames which will discuss each of these areas in detail. Come back to this overview before transitioning to a new sub-part so the learner can appreciate how they are covering all of the objectives one by one.

Sources of Additional Detailed Training on functions of the Public Information Officer Title Text only Related to restating Objective 1 Overall one Framed (circle) Content rotated/tilted to one side within circle frame No real sub-frames needed since the content will be a list and possibly some hyperlinks to FEMA websites.

Roles and responsibilities of the PIO during a disaster or public health emergency Title Text only Related to restating Objective 2 Overall one Framed (circle) Content rotated/tilted to one side within circle frame

Roles and responsibilities of the PIO during a disaster or public health emergency Role of the Public Information Officer (PIO) in a disaster or public health emergency is to –Advise the incident commander –Establish and operates within the Joint Information System (JIS) when appropriate Physical location at a Joint Information Center (JIC) –Ensures that decision makers and the public remain informed New frame (perhaps a bracket if circle was previously used) Content rotated/tilted to one side within circle frame

Identify where in the incident command/unified command structure the PIO function is located. Public Information Officer within a typical Incident Command Structure –Member of Command Staff –The conduit for information to internal and external stakeholders, including the media –Advises Incident Commander on information dissemination and media relations –Incident Commander approves information that the PIO releases –Obtains information from and –provides information to Planning Section. –Obtains information from and provides information to community and media. New frame (perhaps a bracket if circle was previously used) Content rotated/tilted to one side within circle frame Integrate with image on next page.

Identify where in the incident command/unified command structure the PIO function is located. Joint Information Centers (JIC) –Physical location where public information staff collocate –Provides the structure for coordinating and disseminating critical information JIC Characteristics –Includes representatives of all agencies in the response –Has procedures and protocols for communicating and coordinating with other JICs This way the same messages are being communicated with the public and decision makers which are coordinated and do not contain conflicting information New frame (along side of image provided on next page) Content rotated/tilted to one side within circle frame

Differences in role of the health department spokesperson and the incident PIO Title Text only Related to restating Objective 2 Overall one Framed (circle) Content rotated/tilted to one side within circle frame

Differences in role of the health department spokesperson and the incident PIO As a single agency during a disaster or public health emergency, messages intended for the public will be coordinated through a JIS mechanism and involve the agency spokesperson or PIO communicating critical information to the incident commander and to the JIS. The health department will only under special circumstances and with authority from the government executive communicate directly with the media or issue press releases during a disaster. Types of information mid-level public health works could be expected to prepare for use by the PIO during a public health emergency Title Text only Related to restating Objective 2 Overall one Framed (circle) Content rotated/tilted to one side within circle frame

Types of information mid-level public health works could be expected to prepare for use by the PIO during a public health emergency Typical information includes various types of the following: –Epidemiologic data Case definition Cases Communicability –PH Laboratory Data Type of analysis Nature of pathogen –Environmental Health Data Exposure assessment Worker safety/PPE recommendations –Clinical Data Recommendations on treatment Prophylaxis Vaccination Protective measures for the general public New frame (perhaps a bracket if circle was previously used) Content rotated/tilted to one side within circle frame
