CBE O-Week event for academics Tips and tricks for teaching Dr Anna von Reibnitz Research School of Finance, Actuarial Studies and Statistics College of Business and Economics

Going the extra mile Take those extra steps that are not necessarily expected of you –Shows students that you are personally invested in their learning and, in doing so, inspires a reciprocal boost of effort Personal example: commitment to retape lecture recordings when they fail (e.g. technological glitches) 2 Student reaction: “She re-taped a lecture that unsuccessfully taped because of technology failure at her spare time. This reflects her attitude of teaching. Furthermore, she provides fair resource to all the students. … she does not release some key information without taping to earn attendance of her lecture. She won students by her teaching skill, familiarity of students' need and kind heart.”

Authentic learning: e.g. using real world data and case studies 3 Up to date, real world data Student Reaction: “the lecture materials are directly linked to the real financial world, as in what are we going to do if we work in an investment bank or as a financial analyst”

Wattle: Organise using the Restrict access tool Lecturer view 4

Wattle: Restrict access tool Student view 5 Student reaction: “I also find that the Wattle page is extremely organised. Having clarity really helps my study.”

Additional Tips Encourage and pay attention to student suggestions and feedback: –Body language and facial expression in class –Encourage students to tell you when they don’t understand –Give students the opportunity to suggest class content Talk about and reflect on your teaching, e.g. through the Educational Fellowship Scheme –“Reflective narrative”: What works? What doesn’t work? Why? How might I improve further? – fellowship-schemehttps://services.anu.edu.au/training/anu-educational- fellowship-scheme Practice before you teach! 6
