Education Act 2011 – Careers Education & Guidance A new duty on schools in England to secure independent careers guidance for all pupils in years 9 to 11. Removal of the duty on schools in England to provide careers education for Y7- Y11 Removal from schools and colleges in England of the duty to provide careers advisers with access to pupils and students and information on pupils and students for the purposes of giving guidance. Removal of the separate duty on schools in England to provide careers information but continuation of the duty in further education institutions. The collection and publication by the Government of data about the kinds of activities that pupils from a school or college go on to do after they leave.

Statutory Guidance for Schools on Careers Guidance for Young People To be published in Spring 2012 – DFE website Extract from early draft document Providing careers education for young people The requirement for schools to provide a programme of careers education (section 43 of Part VII of the Education Act 1997) will be repealed as the Government does not consider it is necessary to legislate for this. The removal of this provision does not imply that careers education is unimportant. Schools should recognise that the range of activities encompassed within the term ‘careers education’ are important in contextualising the careers guidance on offer to pupils, supporting the development of decision making and career management skills. Schools should consider how these activities are best delivered, taking into account the particular needs of their pupils.
