The Cincinnati Engineering Enhanced Math and Science Program (CEEMS) Welcome Reception June 18, 2012 CEEMS is supported by the National Science Foundation grant # Any opinions, findings, conclusions, and/or recommendations are those of the investigators and do not necessarily reflect the views of the Foundation.

An Emerging and Critical Problem of the Science & Engineering Labor Force The National Science Board In preparing Indicators 2004, we have observed a troubling decline in the number of U.S. citizens who are training to become scientists and engineers, whereas the number of jobs requiring science and engineering (S&E) training continues to grow.

Current Student Engagement in STEM Despite New Opportunities Lower Student Interest in STEM From 1985 to 2005: Engineering bachelor degrees down 5.7% Students interested in engineering dropped from 11% to 7.2% Nanotechnology Biotechnology Cyberinfrastructure

Timing is right for CEEMS The new standards are centered in “real world application: connections to engineering” Adoption of Ohio’s College and Career Ready Standards in Science

Coming soon Raises engineering design to same level as scientific inquiry and thus fully integrates engineering and technology into science education

Key to Effective Engineering Education: Teacher Preparation Currently, the majority of teachers are not prepared to bring an engineering perspective to the classroom.

Goal of CEEMS Establish a new cadre of math and science teachers trained to inspire and engage students with engineering design challenges
