Doug Gilman Bobby Gaffney Engineering Design Technology Presentation September 7, 2010 Global Positioning System GPS

2 History Value Growth This presentation is to inform everyone about GPS systems covering its history and importance.

3 The GPS was first invented and used in 1970 by the US military. The GPS system was made up of 24 military satellites circling the earth at an altitude of 11,000 miles.

4 GPS on missing plane was traced from satellite One of the 24 satellites transferred planes signal to officials In 1983, a lost Korean airline was shot down in Soviet Territory. Because of this event it was decided to allow civilian use of the GPS system. GPS system is now available for public use

5 Graph represents steady growth of GPS systems within Mobile Devices Accuracy of GPS systems have resulted in huge sales over past years In 2000, GPS had more than 1.5 million users. Its economic impact was estimated at $6.2 billion. By 2010, its economic exceeded $50 billion.

GPS is an technology that has huge value to today’s society. -Its Easy -Its Convenient -Its Helpful -Its Trustworthy -Its Reliable Uses: Police, Military, Aircraft, Hiking, Fishing, Miners, Medical Situations, Vehicles, and many more

Problems with the GPS system -GPS signals vary due to location -Users may become too dependent on them -Need to be updated due to changes With GPS systems now available in most cars, users may get distracted while driving causing accidents.

8 -Easier than Road Maps -GPS signals are Free! -Guide you through unfamiliar areas -Suggests alternative routes Questions? GPS systems provide accurate location and time information for an anyone in the world in all weather and environment.
