Happy Wednesday Please take out the following: o Syllabus signature o Write down the homework on your stamp sheet o Piece of paper Tonight’s Homework: Paragraph about the Motivation Article P. 6 # 1-16 even odd,, 33-35, 38, 40 Procedure’s Quiz on Thursday

Classroom Expectations Remember it is a new year and you all have A’s. If you want to keep your A you need to work for it.

Tour of My Classroom Pencil sharpener Passing in Papers Passing out Papers Agenda/ Learning Objective/ Homework Absent No Name Question Board

Homework Policy You will receive a new stamp sheet usually on Monday. On the stamp sheet, it will tell you when your homework packet is due. You will staple ALL your homework and stamp sheet BEFORE the bell rings the day the packet is due.

Homework Policy You MUST correct all your homework in red pen EVERYDAY to get the 5 points. – It is either 0 or 5 points You MUST answer the student comments on the bottom of the stamp sheet. There might be some days when I collect the homework before your stamp sheet is due. This is because I want to see if you understand a concept. I might tell you before, but not always!

Homework Quiz When your homework packet is due, you will also have a homework quiz ( 1 question). You will do this on the back of your stamp sheet! It will ask you “Solve Question # 5 on page 180”. – This is why it is imperative that you correct ALL your homework!

Motivation Article

On your Paper… Write ALL the possible symbols/terms for the following: – Addition – Subtraction – Multiplication – Division Do this silently. You will be turning this in for participation points.

1.1: Variables and Expressions Learning Objective SWBAT translate between words and algebra.

Think-Pair-Share What do you think a variable means in math? What do you think a constant means in math?

Vocabulary Variable – Letter used to represent a value that can change – EX: 3x+ 4 : variable is _____ Constant – Value that does not change – EX: 3x+ 4 : constant is _____

Vocabulary Numerical Expression – contains only constants and/or operations. – EX: Algebraic Expressions – Contains variables, constants, and/or operations – EX:

Brainstorm…Whiteboard Time! What are different words to describe the following mathematical operations? + – x÷

Now take this time to write everything down in your notes!

Whiteboard What are all the ways that you can write “2 times y” ?

Example 1:Translating from Algebra to Words Give two ways to write each algebraic expression in words. 9 + r 7m

Whiteboards Give two ways to write each algebraic expression in words. q-3 j/ 6

1a. 4 – n 1b. 1c. 9 + q 1d. 3(h) 4 decreased by n the sum of 9 and q the quotient of t and 5 the product of 3 and h Give two ways to write each algebraic expression in words. Whiteboards n less than 4 t divided by 5 q added to 9 3 times h

Example 2: Writing an Algebraic Expression 1.Seven more than n 2.The product of seven and n

Whiteboards The difference of n and 7 The quotient of n and seven

To translate words into algebraic expressions, read the problem to determine what actions are taking place. Put together, combine Add Subtract MultiplyDivide Find how much more or less Put together equal groups Separate into equal groups

Whiteboards John types 62 words per minute. Write an expression for the number of words he types in m minutes. Roberto is 4 years older than Emily, who is y years old. Write an expression for Roberto ’ s age.

Whiteboards Joey earns $5 for each car he washes. Write an expression for the number of cars Joey must wash to earn d dollars. Miriam is 5 cm taller than Jan. Jan is m centimeters tall. Write an expression for Miriam ’ s height in centimeters.

EX 3:Writing an Algebraic Expression a)Two times a number plus 5 First define a variable

Whiteboard 7 less than three times a number

Example 4: Evaluating Algebraic Expressions Evaluate the expression for the replacement set {2, 3, 9}. A.3b B. n

Whiteboards Evaluate the expression for the replacement set {2, 5, 10}. A.15- n B.10/ x

Example 4: Application Approximately 85 bottles must be recycled to produce the fiberfill for a sleeping bag. Write an expression for the number of bottles needed to make s sleeping bags

Whiteboard To make one sweater, sixty-three 20- ounce plastic drink bottles must be recycled. Write an expression for the number of bottles needed to make s sweaters.

Give two ways to write each algebraic expression in words. 1. j – p Write an expression 3. Mark is 5 years older than Juan, who is y years old. Write an expression for Mark’s age. Closure:Whiteboards

Whiteboards Shemika practices basketball for 2 hours each day. Write an expression for the number of hours she practices in d days. Find the number of hours she practices in 5, 12, and 20 days.
