Scientific Method 2010 KMHS Ms A and 10A How to ‘do’ an experiment

Overview The problem The question –Independent and dependent variables Literature review Hypothesis Experiment Record keeping Analysing results Conclusion

What’s the problem We want to produce a broad bean plant will yield a lot of yummy broad beans. We also want to use the dried biomass to feed out hungry sheep. Therefore we want to find where the best place to plant our seeds is to meet both these conditions.

The question  What are we investigating?  What we will change (independent variable)?  What will we measure as a result of that change (dependent variable)?  What will stay the same (controlled variables)?  What can’t we control?  Write question in terms of these dependent and independent variables.

Literature review Finding out more from books, websites etc. Must be referenced! Keep a list of your sources! Use to inform your hypothesis Question? What information will you be looking for?

Hypothesis  An EDUCATED and INFORMED guess!  A predication!  If_________ then________  Testable  In terms of variables.
