Regions Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is found completely on the big island of Hawaii. The landforms included are cinder cones, glowing pit craters, rivers of lava, fountains of spatter, craters, wind swept coastal shores, seacoasts, lowland, rainforests, upland woodlands.

History  The earliest date that humans lived there was 1,600 years ago when the Polynesians first migrated to Hawaii. They had a unique culture which involved making petroglyphs, worshipping akua (gods) and ‘aumakua (guardian spirits), and keeping their history through oli (chant), mele (song), and hula (dance). boys wearing ilio (dog) teeth bracelets and boar tusk anklets during mele (songs) was part of the celebration for a good life. They believed that the land takes care of them.

History The first Polynesians came from the Marcasus Islands. They brought the roots of kalo (taro), ‘uala (sweet potatoes), niu (coconuts), mai’a (bananas), ko (sugar cane), pua’a (pigs), ilio (dogs) and moa (chickens). There was also a group that came from the Society Islands 800 years later.

History The people were a very stratified society. Sometimes people were burned alive for upsetting the chief. The first level of society was the ali’i (chief). The next level is the professionals. they were experts in rituals, canoe building and herb healing. The next level were the maka ‘ainana (commoners). They farmed, fished, built walls, houses and paid taxes to the chief. The lowest level were kauwa (slaves and outcasts).

Natural Features  The natural features in our park are cinder cones, glowing pit craters, rivers of lava, fountains of spatter, volcanic chains, and earthquakes. Yes, these features are still at work.  The natural features in our park are cinder cones, glowing pit craters, rivers of lava, fountains of spatter, volcanic chains, and earthquakes. Weather The temperature is usually between degrees All year. The weather is pretty consistent. At the tops of volcanoes it can b e 20º lower. Nights tend to be 20º lower too. Animals have adapted to the weather but still suffer from volcanic activity.

Safety  The things that effect safety in the park include bad air qualities, falling ash and general safety hazards. Things that people should bring include first aid kit, cell phone, hiking boots, long pants, water, snack, sunscreen, hat and sun glasses. Stay on marked trails and avoid cliffs. Earthquakes can happen so be ready. Know how to handle cuts and scrapes, choking and general first aid procedures.

Recreation and accommodation  Activities people can do in the park include walking though a lava tube, Look into a volcano or watch the Kilauea explode.

Highlights  The well known geological features are cinder cones volcanoes, rain forests, volcano craters, and flowing lava.

Plants  Ohia trees only grow through cracks in rocks  ferns were the first plants in the park.  Ohia trees only grow through cracks in rocks  ferns were the first plants in the park.

Wildlife There are many animals such as humpback whales, birds, bats, turtles, and rabbits. The most interesting bird is the nene that does not fly because it has adapted to not needing to fly since it had no natural predators. So it needed no method of escape. The apapane is a red bird that sips nectar from the ohia tree.

Wildlife  The Hoary Bat, Monk seal, Hawksbill sea turtle, hawks, and owls are some animals that live in Hawaii.

Facing the Future  Protected plants and animals in the park are being destroyed by declining habitat outside the park, invasive plants, bird malaria, wildfires, feral cats and pigs, introducing goats, sheep, rats, mongoose, ants and wasps.

Facing the future (continued) The Division Of Resource Management is working to solve this problem. Some of the things they are doing are: 1.Remove non-native species. 2.Restore park ecosystem to natural conditions. 3.Focus on recovering 4 native species the nene, hawaiian petrel, Hawksbill Sea Turtle, and Mauna Loa Silversword.
