Periodicals Periodicals are publications that are issued on a regular basis and are useful for providing current and focused information on a variety of topics Newspapers, magazines and journals are examples of types of periodicals Periodicals are available in both print and electronic format (in the Library databases)

Journal Articles: > Intended for a scholarly/professional audience > Usually written by an expert in the field > Often report on original research > Often require specialized knowledge or vocabulary > Documented – include in - text citations and references of previous research > Are peer reviewed

Peer reviewed Also called refereed or academic or scholarly Well researched authoritative work A committee of scholars/professionals approve the quality of the article before it is published in the journal Peer review helps to establish a journal as an authoritative source

Trade Publications > Intended for practitioners of a profession > Usually written by practitioners and professional writers. They are not always signed by the author. > Advertisements are industry related > Very few, if any citations > May contain technical or specialized language used in the profession > Not considered scholarly

Trade Publication Article: Blaney, W. (2010). Taking steps to prevent pressure ulcers. Nursing, 40(3), Scholarly Journal Article (review article): Krapfl, L. A., & Gray, M. (2008). Does regular positioning prevent pressure ulcers? Journal of Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nursing,35(6), doi: /01.WON

Scholarly Journal Article : Original Research Study: Vanderwee, K., Grypdonck, M., De Bacquer, D., & Defloor, T. (2007). Effectiveness of turning with unequal time intervals on the incidence of pressure ulcer lesions. Journal of Advanced Nursing, 57(1), doi: /j x

Scholarly Articles Most of the time you will be asked to find scholarly articles for your assignments. Make sure you know the difference. While nursing trade periodicals can be useful in getting an overview of a topic, they are not scholarly. If you need help in determining what is scholarly, ask your teacher or library staff members.

For more information on how to distinguish between magazine, journal and trade publications go to: Scholarly vs. Popular Publications Scholarly vs. Popular Publications library website > Library & Research >Find articles & journals
