Neil Dixon PH/DT Dubna July 1010 Weld Line Progress has been made since December 2009 ( last visit ) Weld line now installed in clean and controlled environment Optimisation. Force needed on sonotrod. Drawing mechanism. Forward speed for quality weld. Overlap of seem. Seem size. Spool tension device. Online microscope control of weld. 7

Neil Dixon PH/DT Dubna July 1010 Weld Line Foreseen improvements. Sonotrod: 2 new sonotrods are in JINR ( for testing – urgently ) 2 remain at CERN for surface treatment ( Carbide ) after test. Action to be completed by 8 th July latest Action to be completed by 8 th July latest Anvil: A new design of anvil is in progress, the idea is not to eliminate the pick up problem, but to minimise it. The new design is in three pieces The support The guide rod The mandrel / anvil Action to be completed by 8 th July. 8

Neil Dixon PH/DT Dubna July 1010 Weld Line Pre shaping device for the PET to reduce linear motion forces The aim is to be fully operational by September 2010 including tracking database storage of tubes 9

Neil Dixon PH/DT Dubna July 1010 Straw storage under pressure Nipple design. Control in time. 10

Neil Dixon PH/DT Dubna July 1010 Storage under pressure Nipple design. Simple design with no moving parts. Straw tube sideGas inlet side 11

Neil Dixon PH/DT Dubna July 1010 Latex Tube is non-return valve Latex tube 12

Neil Dixon PH/DT Dubna July 1010 Valve ready to be fitted to the straw tube 13

Neil Dixon PH/DT Dubna July 1010 Test at CERN on prototype valve ( not optimised ) 14 Leak rate recorded for 10 cc tube per min 0.16 mbar/min per hour 9.64 mbar/hr The leak rate will be reduced further when the valve is closed with an ‘O’ ring and screw. This system will then be suitable to run the final gas test.

Neil Dixon PH/DT Dubna July 1010 Control in time. 15 We propose to control the stored straws in time. Pressure will be difficult to measure. The deflection of the simply supported straw will be measured. Development work to begin upon our return to CERN

Neil Dixon PH/DT Dubna July 1010 Conclusions 16 Weld line is close to being fully operational. PET research and development appears to be coming to an end. We have a solution for storage under pressure. We should target a start date for full production in September 2010

Neil Dixon PH/DT Dubna July 1010 Test at CERN on prototype valve ( not optimised ) 17 Valve design notes: The inlet valve, should have a latex cover on the inside of the straw tube On the external side of the valve, the inner diameter of the inlet should be threaded to M4, the extremity of the valve should allow for the fitting of an O ring and screw The Outlet side, should be a simple tube, with its inner diameter threaded to M4 and provision for and O ring at the extremity. Advantages: Simple design simple manufacture Light weight ( 2 parts ) Can be fitted immediately after straw manufacture Prevents foreign objects in straw tube Keeps straw under pressure, should show any weak straws ( leak ) Manipulation Valve diameter is less than inner diameter of tube, straw may be installed inflated. Disadvantages Installation by gluing ( Araldite rapid ) No alignment, but this may not be needed. Straw storage under pressure The inlet latex valve not only allows the straw to be inflated, but, it mat be closed using a simple M4 screw and O ring Straw leak testing The time the inlet valve is closed, and gas is input from the outlet side, we therefore can make a precise measurement without worrying about permeation or leaks through the latex seal. Assembly TO BE TESTED AT CERN As both sides of the straw now have threaded connectors ( imprecisely installed ) it is possible to mechanically grasp either end of the tube. Using alignment plates it should be possible to install, align and bond an inflated tube ( thus mounting it in final running conditions ) Leak rate recorded for 10 cc tube per min mbar/min per hour mba/hr
