Cinderella Variations Unit Overview  5 th Grade  5 Day Unit  A Constructivist Language Arts and Technology Unit  Includes two major portions  Cultural research and presentation  Original story writing

Unit Overview (cont.)  Goals for Students  To understand the literary elements of a fairy tale and be able to use this information to create an original fairy tale  Increase cultural awareness  To develop writing process and presentation skills

Unit Overview (cont.)  Objectives  The student will be able to demonstrate an increase in multi- cultural knowledge through a group presentation.  The student will be able to demonstrate reading comprehension of the Cinderella variations.  The student will be able to demonstrate an increase in vocabulary.  The student will be able to understand the literary elements of a fairy tale.  The students will be able to apply their knowledge of the fairy tale to create an original Cinderella Variation.

Cinderella Variations Student’s Background  The Week before this unit the class will have read eight cultural variations of the Cinderella fairy tale.  The students also have background knowledge in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Inspiration, and Photoshop from previous classes and class work.

Cinderella Variations Unit Day 1  This week will begin with a review of the Cinderella variations read the previous week.  The elements of the stories will be reviewed and compared using Excel.

Day 3  Students will gather what they have discovered through their research into a concept map using Inspiration

Day 3 (cont.)  Students will create their presentation PowerPoint files  Students will work with pre-writing activities using Word and Inspiration  The Word activity helps students organize the information they are going to use in their story— including the nation they’re researching, setting, etc.  The Inspiration activity helps students to order the events that will take place within their stories

Cinderella wanted to go to the ball, but her step- mother locked her up and wouldn’t let her go. Her step- sisters tore her dress up so she had nothing to wear. B. Cinderella had to be home by midnight so she rushed out of the ball and lost her glass slipper. The prince didn’t know who she was so he had to search the town for her. All he had was her glass slipper. Item Lost: Glass Slipper Resolution: Cinderella’s mice friends let her out of the cellar. Cinderella’s Fairy God Mother turned Cinderella into a princess and made her a dress and a way to the ball. The prince took the glass slipper around to every girl in the town. They all tried on the slipper. Cinderella was the last one, and she was a perfect fit. The prince had found his princess.

Day 4  Today students will present their cultural PowerPoint presentations  Students will also begin drafting their original stories in PowerPoint  Before they begin this activity the class will walk through an example story  Example Story PowerPoint Example Story PowerPoint Example Story PowerPoint

Day 5  Students will work within their groups to do final editing and publishing (printing) of their stories  Before binding, students will manipulate graphics using Photoshop to create covers for their books
