Who is to blame for climate change?

Globally, which of the following activities is the biggest contributor to greenhouse gasses? a) Manufacturing b) Creating electricity c) Travel d) Agriculture e) Deforestation

Energy Industry Forestry Agriculture Transport Residental/ Commercial Waste

L/O: Who are the biggest contributors to global warming? Is enough being done to address the problem?

Think/Pair/share Predict: Which are the top 5 nations contributing to CO2 emissions? Why did you select these 5 countries? Justify.

What is CO2 per capita? Could this make a difference to emissions? To what extent are CO2 emissions related to population size?

Now predict the top 5 countries per capita (CO2 per person)? Using the x2 resources ed to you write in the actual emission figures Sources: Guardian_Climate_Change_Atlas (see wisdom) CO2 emissions data table Q: Why do you think the CO2 per capita lists are so different for the top5 producers of CO2? Q: What advice would you give to those Governments trying to cut down their country’s overall CO2 emissions?

So what is being done to ensure that greenhouse gas emissions are reduced worldwide?

What is the Kyoto Protocol agreement? The Kyoto Protocol An international agreement linked to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, which commits its Parties by setting internationally binding emission reduction targets. Adopted 1997 Came into force 2005

Kyoto Basics Industrialised economies – reduce GHG by 5% of their 1990 level by Richer countries can trade in GHG emissions or invest in cleaner-energy projects in developing economies in order to gain “carbon credits” that they can then offset against their quota. Poorer countries do not have binding emissions targets. They make a general pledge to avoid pollution.

Has it worked? “The Kyoto protocol has failed to have any meaningful impact on global carbon emissions and has been a waste of time and effort”. Is the above statement fair? Groups of 2 Prepare a summary diagram to answer this question. Divide your page into 2, One side should be ‘yes’ the other ‘no’ Write a conclusion at the bottom. Colour code different view points

What is your plan? How are you going to approach this task? Whose opinions do you need? How are you going to present your findings? Useful Sources: /nov/26/kyoto-protocol-carbon-emissions /nov/26/kyoto-protocol-carbon-emissions oto-protocol-good-intentions-failed-legislation/ oto-protocol-good-intentions-failed-legislation/

The Kyoto Protocol – what has been learnt? Discuss in pairs: What should/could have been done to improve the effectiveness of the Kyoto Protocol? Feedback
