Food Groups & Nutrients

Defined: Foods made from wheat, rice, oats, barley, etc. Examples: bread, cereal, pasta, oatmeal, … KEY NOTE: Make at least half your grains whole grains! Whole Grains - – contain the entire grain kernel Refined Grains -  – Grains have been milled, a process that removes fiber, iron, and B vitamins

Defined: Vegetables (duh) & vegetable juice Examples: carrots, broccoli, corn, asparagus, pumpkins, …. KEY NOTE: Vary your veggies! – 5 subgroups: different color veggies provide you will different kinds of nutrients that your body needs

Defined: Fruits (of course) & fruit juices Examples: Apples, Bananas, oranges, … KEY NOTE: fruits contain natural sugars that convert to energy quickly… make half your plate fruits and vegetables m/watch?v=cL_qGMfbtA k
