Weather Tools What are they? What do they do?

The Most Common Weather Tools Are: Thermometer Wind/weather Vane Anemometer Barometer Rain Gauge Wind sock Weather satellite Radar Weather balloon

Thermometer A thermometer is a weather tool used to measure the temperature. Measures in either Fahrenheit or Celsius

Wind/weather Vane By observing wind vanes, we can know the direction of the wind. Knowing the direction of the wind is an important part in predicting the weather. It spins on a rod and points in the direction from which the wind comes

Anemometer Wind speed is an important part of weather. An anemometer is a weather tool that measures wind speed. Used in a weather station.

Barometer Barometers are important to measuring air/atmospheric pressure. Air pressure can help you predict good or bad weather.

Rain Gauge A rain gauge is a weather tool used to collect rain. Liquid precipitation over a set period of time is measured in millimeters or inches. Using measurements on the side of the rain gauge, you can see how many inches it rained.

Wind sock Similar to a wind/weather vain. It is one of the oldest tools. It measures wind direction.

Weather satellite Orbits the Earth to provide images (pictures) of weather systems and send them back to us on Earth.

Radar Used to find the location, movement and amount of precipitation.

Weather balloon Sends measurements to weather stations about wind speed and direction.
