Grade 2 Coordinate Grid Copyright © Ed2Net Learning, Inc.1

Hello! Today we will learn about Coordinate Grid and how to use it. Copyright © Ed2Net Learning, Inc.2

Coordinate Grid Copyright © Ed2Net Learning, Inc.3 Look at the calendar below.

From the calendar you can describe the position of a date.  For Example: What is the position of 17 on the calendar. You can see from the calendar that position of 17 on the calendar is fourth row and first column.  Here calendar is a grid. Copyright © Ed2Net Learning, Inc.4

Shown below is a grid.  You can use a grid to locate things. Copyright © Ed2Net Learning, Inc.5

For Example Copyright © Ed2Net Learning, Inc.6 Up Right Fairy tales History Nature Library

You can locate the position of different books by looking at the grid.  Books on nature are at 1right and 1 up.  History books are at 1 right and 3 up.  Fairy tales are at 3 right and 4 up. Copyright © Ed2Net Learning, Inc.7

Another Example: Copyright © Ed2Net Learning, Inc.8

From the grid of a class you can say  Ronnie sits at 1 right and 1 up.  Jacob sits at 2 right and 3 up.  Sarah sits at 3 right an 3 up. Copyright © Ed2Net Learning, Inc.9

Ordered Numbers An ordered pair of numbers is used to find the name points on the grid. (3,1) The first number shows how many places right. Copyright © Ed2Net Learning, Inc.10 The second number shows how many places up

For Example: Copyright © Ed2Net Learning, Inc.11 Cookies Doll Candies

From the grid we can describe the positions of the objects.  Doll is at (1,3) which means 1 square to the right and 3 squares up.  Candies are at (2,2)  Cookies are at (3,4) The ordered pair used to describe the position are known as Grid Coordinates. Copyright © Ed2Net Learning, Inc.12

 Another Example: Copyright © Ed2Net Learning, Inc.13 Wafers Teddy Candies

From the picture in the precious slide we can see:  The teddy is located at (1,3)  The wafers are located at (3,4)  The candies are located at (3,2) Copyright © Ed2Net Learning, Inc.14

Note:  In an ordered pair (3,4) is not equal to (4,3).  The first pair of coordinates mean 3 squares to the right and 4 squares up.  The second pair means 4 squares to the right and 3 squares up. Copyright © Ed2Net Learning, Inc.15

 An Example: Find the animals in the neighborhood: Rats are at (2,3) Cats at (3,2) Dogs at (2,2) Notice that (3, 2) is not the same as (2, 3). Both these positions have different animals. Copyright © Ed2Net Learning, Inc.16 Dogs Rats Cats

Now try this Tammy and his friends are standing in a grid shaped park. Give the location of:  Tammy (1, 1)  Susie (2, 3)  Barbara (3, 4) Give the location of Tammy if he moves two squares up. (1, 3) Copyright © Ed2Net Learning, Inc.17 Tammy Susie Barbara
