USING MENTOR TEXTS TO HELP OUR WRITING

WHAT IS A MENTOR TEXT? Mentor Texts are examples of the type of writing we are trying to write as writers. We look for what the author is doing in their writing and how we can try and do the same thing in our writing. Mentor texts can give us inspiration! Mentor texts can be role models for our writing!

LOOKING AT MENTOR TEXT FOR CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT As we read think about: Character Motivations (What the character wants.) Obstacles (What gets in the way of their wants.) Both can be Internal OR External

WE HAVE ALREADY READ SOME MENTOR TEXTS FOR REALISTIC FICTION The Golden LieSeventh Grade

WE HAVE ALREADY READ SOME MENTOR TEXTS FOR REALISTIC FICTION People Call Me Crazy

READING “THE SCHOLARSHIP JACKET” As we read, think about what the author is doing to develop the character? What are Martha’s motivations and obstacles? Both internal and external.

READING TIME – PICK A STUDENT MENTOR TEXT Paste the mentor text spiral anchor chart in your spiral. Read one of the two student mentor text examples. Think about the mentor texts you would like to look towards as role models – take notes on your mentor text spiral anchor chart.
