Aboriginal Myths Discussion – What is the attitude toward Aboriginal people in Canada? What are some stereotypes? The term ‘Indian’ is OK Aboriginal people don’t pay taxes Aboriginal students get to go to school for free

Aboriginal Peoples in Canada In 1982, the Canadian constitution recognized three groups – First Nations, Métis and Inuit – as Aboriginal peoples It is still used as it reflects much of the language used In Canadian legal documents. Canada is not the only country with Indigenous peoples, as thousands of groups exist all around the world.

The Tax Issue In general, Aboriginal people in Canada are required to pay taxes on the same basis as other people in Canada. Inuit and Métis people are not eligible for this exemption and generally do not live on reserves. The personal property of a status Indian or band situated on a reserve, are tax exempt. However, the reserve council can tax these. Employment income earned by a Status Indian working on a reserve is considered tax exempt. The GST or HST generally do not apply to purchases by Status Indians if the purchase is made on a reserve

Education This is how it works: Ottawa provides education money to Indian bands, which in turn decide whose education to finance. Because there is only so much money for post- secondary education, some bands may decide to fund only those pursuing their first degree, or perhaps only those living on the reserve.

What Costs are Covered? Financial assistance may be provided in the following areas: Tuition support for part-time and full-time students that may include fees for registration, tuition and the cost of books and supplies required for courses. Travel support for full-time students who must leave their permanent place of residence to attend college or university. Students may qualify for funding to return home twice per academic year. Living expenses for full-time students to help cover the costs such as food, shelter, and transportation.

Textbooks! Read the pages and answer the questions on the Treaty Process indicated on the sheet provided.
