In Scotland

Age The disadvantage of becoming wise is that you realise how foolish you have been

Central heating has gone from being a luxury to being a necessity

Today the largest slice of UK energy is used to produce heat. The vast majority of our heat is produced by burning fossil fuels and is responsible for around a third of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions

62% of domestic energy is used for space heating & 18% for hot water Appliances account for 14% with lighting & cooking at 6%

Renewable Heating Air Source Heat Pumps Require a well insulated home and changes to the distribution system. Also need for HW storage. May require planning permission. Ground Source Heat Pumps Require a well insulated home and changes to the distribution system. Also need for HW storage. Require large area for collectors. More expensive purchase and installation. Biomass Pellet Boilers Require a flue and plenty of space for dry storage of pellets. Pellet supply and delivery a consideration as is cleaning and maintenance. Solar Thermal Long pay back. Aesthetics and need for ostensibly S facing surface plus HW storage.

Difficulty/Cost Potential Reach

Who fits it? 120,000 Gas Safe installers 2442 MCS Renewables Installers – Biomass 336 – ASHP 747 – GSHP 566 – Solar Thermal 793

Carbon Targets % % % % EU Renewable energy progress report 2015 The Climate Change (Scotland) Act requires a minimum 42% cut in emissions by 2020 and 80% by 2050 and annual targets for Scottish emissions from 2010 to 2050.

2050 Closer than 1970

Low Carbon Scotland – By 2020 every home to have loft and cavity wall insulation, where this is cost-effective and technically feasible, plus simple measures such as draught-proofing and pipe lagging; every home heated with gas central heating to have a highly efficient boiler with appropriate controls; at least 100,000 homes to have adopted some form of individual or community renewable heat technology for space and or water heating.

‘In order to achieve the legislated target to reduce emissions in 2050 by 80% relative to 1990 levels, and given limits on scope for emissions reduction in some key sectors, it is likely that heat from buildings will have to be almost fully decarbonised over the next four decades.’ 5 th Carbon Budget Committee on Climate Change

UK Water Households use 55% more water than in 1980 (150 lpp/pd) By 2020, demand could rise by 5% or 800 million lpd By 2050, climate change could reduce UK water by 10 to 15% By 2050, average summer river flows in could reduce by as much as 50 to 80%

Water Strategies REDUCE Reduce water demand through using water efficient products and changing behaviours 1 SUPPLEMENT Supplement water use by using harvested rainwater 2 RECOVER Recover greywater for re-use 3 DISPOSE Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems 4 Aerated Shower Heads Waterless Urinals Rainwater Harvesting Low flush wc
