1/29

Getting to the Heart of a Story (w/o reading it all) Who are the protagonist(s) and antagonist(s)? What is the central conflict? When/where does the story take place (and why does the setting matter)? Why do the protagonist(s) and antagonist(s) behave as they do in connection with the conflict? How is the conflict resolved?

allegory a work of literature in which events, characters, and details of settings have a symbolic meaning. Allegories are used to teach or explain moral principles or truths. (Parable) What do you think is the moral of this story?

allegory  symbol What indications are there that the veil is symbolic? – Unexpected – Hooper won’t take it off. – People have very strong reactions to it. – It’s never fully explained. – It pretty much dominates the story.

allegory  symbol What do you think it symbolizes? The veil symbolizes things that we don’t want others to know about—secrets Also the “dark side” of human nature, which we all have—gossip, speculation, intolerance for people who are “different”—

paradox A statement or set of circumstances that seems to contradict each other, but which actually expresses a deep truth. What is paradoxical about the veil? It both isolates Hooper and draws people closer to him.

Quiz EC Identify a Romantic or Gothic element in the story. Explain the connection (between the element and Romanticism).
