FOOTBALL HPWB 7 th & 8 th Mr. Flores

Football American football was developed in the 1800’s. The concept of game is to advance ball to endzone either by passing or running ball. In modern football, advance at least 10 yards within 4 downs, or ball changes possession. Offense has possession of the ball. Defense attempts to prevent offense from advancing or scoring. Many rules are in place to keep game competitive.

Skills Needed Communication Running and cutting Catching and passing Blocking and defending Agility, strategy, play calling

Common Terms Line of scrimmage- where the ball is hiked from. Interception- complete catch made be defense. Completion- pass caught by offense. Incomplete pass- pass dropped or not caught by offense. Defense- players trying to prevent the offense from advancing. Offense- players with the ball. Fumble- ball dropped by offense after run or catch. Change of possession- ball possession changes to other team.

Common Positions Simplified Quarterback- player throwing the ball. Receiver- player intending to catch the ball. Running Back- player usually getting handoff from quarterback. Offensive Line- players protecting quarterback and running back. Defensive Line- players attempting to block quarterback. Defensive Backs- players attempting to block receivers.

Football Oval shaped with laces to grip ball. Its shape enables it to be thrown in a spiral.

Football Field Regulation field is 100 yds in length. 2 end zones (touchdown). 2 field goal posts (kicks). Our field of play will be scaled down!!

Football Throw/ Pass Proper grip on ball (C-grip, 2-1-1, or grip) Ball to ear, tracking target. Snap wrist out in front, causing spin. Follow through, finishing across body (7-8pm position)

Football Catch/ Reception Track ball. Fingertips pointing up for higher catch, above waist level. Fingertips pointing down for low catch, below waist level. Use hands, kept away from body to prevent bouncing off. Tuck ball to body after catch.

Football Hand-Off 1 arm up, 1 arm down. Receive ball from quarterback, at midsection area. Tuck ball against body, using bend of elbow. Be aware of where to run the ball.

Football Kick/ Punt Ball is “dropped” downward to kicking foot…eyes on ball. Judge distance of target. Kicked with top of foot. Follow through after kick, using an arc motion. Field goal kicks are performed with inside of foot.

Passing Patterns Communicate with quarterback. Quarterback should “lead” the receiver….pass in stride.
