Culture and Choosing a Job Jeannie Sticher BE

Some organizations will really excite you!!! Why Does Company Culture Matter??

Other companies will lead you to quit……. Why Company Culture Matters

These are the facts: * most people will spend 70% of their time awake working and * most people spend the majority of their interview time asking questions about the job…..not about the company or culture Why Company Culture Matters

So…..how do I find out about the culture? 1. do your research……on line, company websites, independent articles, talk with current and past employees 2. ask the right questions in the interview(s) Why Company Culture Matters

What questions should I ask???? 1. If you could describe your corporate culture in 3 words, what would you say? Watch……body language. (it seldom lies) you will be more than a resume, this question shows creativity Why Company Culture Matters

2. If you were to give a public tour of this company or office, what stops would you make and avoid? - this answer will give you insight into the “greatest hits” and any parts of the culture that is perceived as not positive. Why Company Culture Matters

3. If the local paper were to run an article about your company culture, what would be impossible NOT to include? -similar to #2, but highlights transparency, things everyone should be proud of and what others to know Why Company Culture Matters

4. What is the best part of working for this company that I will not see walking around the office? - digs deeper into the culture behind the culture. Discovers things that are not known until you have worked for a few weeks or more Why Company Culture Matters

5. What are the most common complaints employees make about the culture? - there is always something! This just is insight into what to expect. Example: you find rain very depressing, but accept a job in Seattle. IT RAINS 300 DAYS A YEAR!!!! Why Company Culture Matters

6. May I speak with a few new hires or veteran employees? -some companies are okay, some not. Either way, behavior is the attitude of the culture, and attitude reflects the culture. You will get some real insight! Why Company Culture Matters

7. What do you love best about the culture? -gives you good insight into WHY people stay at the company. Remember….company culture is everything. You cannot work where you do not fit!!! Why Company Culture Matters
