Step By Step Through the New Testament Rev. Christopher J. Respass Antioch Bible Institute Fall 2013 Lesson 11 Mark: Important Events & Issues

I.Jesus Feeds 5000 (Mark 6:30-44) A. There is always a need for rest in ministry because the demand of the people will always be there (v.31). B. Compassion is often the impetus for God’s intervention (v.34). C. “Resources” are needed for ministry, but God is always the original “source” (v. 38, 41). Mark: Important Events & Issues

D. Jesus exercised his power over natural objects. Mark: Important Events & Issues

II.God’s Will or Man’s Tradition (Mark 7:1-23). A. Many people leave the commandment of God to hold on to the tradition of men (v.8). Name some “traditions of men” that Christians hold on to in the church. Mark: Important Events & Issues

B. Corban (v.9-13)—process of declaring gifts to the service of God. C. Spiritual defilement comes from the heart not from food (v.19-23). Mark: Important Events & Issues

III.The Young Rich Ruler (Mark. 10:17-23). Q: Why didn’t the young ruler want to sell all of his belongings? Q: What issue had the young ruler not addressed in his life (see, Exod. 20:17)? Q: How was the young ruler self-deceived? Mark: Important Events & Issues

Q: Greed and covetousness hindered the young ruler’s relationship with God. Is it hindering yours? Are other concerns hindering that relationship? Q: Why is our “goodness” incapable of saving us (v.18)? Mark: Important Events & Issues

IV. Genuine Greatness (Mark 10:35-45). Q: What was the issue in this text? Q: What does it mean to be “great” in Christian culture? Mark: Important Events & Issues

“Christians [are] not to show greatness by flaunting their authority over others. Genuine greatness [comes] from demonstrating love through serving others. A Christian becomes great by serving others, not exercising power.” --Thomas Lea & Tom Hudson Step by Step Through the N.T., p. 70 Mark: Important Events & Issues
