What’s unusual about these pictures? What are they?

Lifestyle and Smoking The number of 15 year old girls who say they smoke has doubled. Glasgow has one of the worst records of lung cancer among women. Smoking is one reason that explains the different mortality rates between the social classes.

The Scottish Government estimates that: Smoking accounts for 24 per cent of all deaths in Scotland, 34 per cent in some areas Lifelong smokers die on average about 10 years younger than non-smokers. Smoking also causes a great deal of long-term ill-health due to diseases of the heart, lungs and arteries and a long list of cancers.

There is a clear relationship between smoking and deprivation. The most recent Household Survey shows adult smoking rates very from 12 per cent in the least deprived fifth of the population to 41 per cent in the most disadvantaged fifth. This is a huge change from 50 years ago when around 50 per cent of men and women across the population smoked.

Smoking and deprivation Smoking rates have fallen in more affluent areas. You are more likely to smoke if you live in a deprived area. There is a widening gap in health inequalities related to smoking. Smoking explains at least half of the inequalities in health.

TASKS Using p.107, take notes about lifestyle and smoking under the following headings: Scottish Government facts about smoking Smoking and Deprivation Smoking and Health Inequalities
