Murchison Middle School IB MYP Grade 8 Community Project

Purpose Participate in a sustained, self-directed inquiry within a global context Generate creative new insights and develop deeper understandings through in-depth investigation Demonstrate the skills, attitudes and knowledge required to complete a project over an extended period of time Communicate effectively in a variety of situations Demonstrate responsible action through, or as a result of, learning and…. appreciate the process of learning and take pride in their accomplishments.

IB MYP Community Service Project This is a new project for all MYP schools in order to provide students the opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to service and action, as well as all the knowledge and skills they have acquired while in the MYP. This project will act as the culminating event to their MYP education and will take place every year in the 8th grade. Students will: Define a goal to address a need in the community Develop a proposal for action Implement action Share process

Objectives A. Investigate Define a goal to address Identify prior learning and subject specific knowledge relevant to the project Demonstrate research skills B. Design / Plan Develop a proposal for action to serve a need in the community Plan and record the development process of the project Demonstrate self-management skills C. Create: Take Action/Do It Demonstrate service as action as the result of the process Demonstrate thinking skills Demonstrate communication and social skills D. Evaluate and Reflect on the Process as you Go Evaluate the quality of the service action against the proposal Reflect on how completing the project has extended their knowledge and understanding of service learning

Projects Can Be -- Direct– You will have interaction that involves people, the environment or animals. Examples include one-on-one tutoring, developing a garden alongside refugees, or teaching dogs behaviors to prepare them for adoption. Indirect service: Although you do not see the recipients during indirect service, you have verified that your actions will benefit the community or environment. Examples include redesigning an organization’s website, writing original picture books to teach a language, or raising fish to restore a stream. Advocacy: You speak on behalf of a cause or concern to promote action on an issue of public interest. Examples include initiating an awareness campaign on hunger in the community, performing a play on replacing bullying with respect, or creating a video on sustainable water solutions. All will include Research: You collect information through varied sources, analyze data and report on a topic of importance to influence policy or practice. Examples include conducting environmental surveys to influence your school, contributing to a study of animal migration patterns, or compiling the most effective means to reduce litter in public spaces.

What is Due May 16/17 ? Completed Design Cycle Process Journal 3 Research Bib Sheets (in Writer’s Journal or as separate sheets with Process Journal) 1 – library source 2 – online source 3 – personal interview (electronic, phone, in person) Visual presentation to share Individually or collaboratively, but no more than 5 students in any class/team.

First “Reflection” is Due February 16/17 Reflect on your process / progress so far. Format is flexible Minimum of 10 entries per individual Entries may include: – lists – charts – action plans – timelines – surveys – research – sketches – interview notes
