MIS Systems Analysis & Design Summary Updated 2013

Different views of information system (IS): Structural view (data, hardware, software procedures) Object view Services view (user interface, data management, data processing/functionality) Architecture view (tiers, Cloud, SOA) Information System Focus

Systems analysis: - Analyzing organizational processes & data either supported or not supported by IS -Analyzing IS (functionality, data, user interface) Emphases of the Course Logical Design – solutions to problems in processes/systems SA&D lectured, exercised in classroom, practiced in assignements, tested.

Data Organizational and/or System Processes User Interface Objects & their Interactions Class Diagram Activity Diagram Use Case Diagram Sequence Diagram Dialogue Representations y x y y x x y x y = primary purpose of a diagram = provides hints/indications Course’s Core: Systems Analyst’s Toolbox Use Case Description x Document Type System Aspect x x y y

Challenges in Systems Analysis What is in the system? Where is system boundary? Process thinking (Activity Diagram) vs. Non-process thinking (Use Case & Class diagrams) Focus on details and completeness Capability to switch between big and small picture Capability to read (and sometimes write) different notation schemes. Keep practicing!

Software practiced: iGrafx, Visio, MS Project, SAP Various systems studied Guest speaker from Finland presented on mobile devices. That’s All Folks! Management perspective (systems examples rooted in specific organizational contexts; concern with management issues) Highlights
