MICROSCOPES: EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW!

“MICROSCOPE” Micro means tiny, and “ Scope ” means view.

MICROSCOPE PARTS: Eyepiece objective lenses Stage Clips Light Source Arm Base Stage Course Focus Fine Focus

FUNCTION OF THE PARTS: A. Course Focus: large focus knob that moves the stage closer to the lenses quickly – use this one first to roughly focus B. Fine Focus: small focus knob that moves the stage closer to the lenses very slowly – use this one second, fine tunes the focus C. Objective Lenses: the lenses closest to the slide – there are usually 3 or 4. The bigger the objective lens, the stronger the “power” or magnification of the lens.

HOW TO USE THE MICROSCOPE: HOW SHOULD YOU CARRY IT? Carry the microscope with both hands --- one on the arm and the other under the base.

HOW TO SET UP THE MICROSCOPE FOR USE: 1. Take the cover off 2. Carefully unwrap the power cord. 3. Plug in the power cord. 4. Turn on the power (light source) by pressing the ON switch.

HOW TO USE THE MICROSCOPE: HOW DO YOU PREPARE A SLIDE? 1. Put your sample on the rectangle slide. 2. Usually, but not always, you will need to put one drop of water on your sample. 3. Place one edge of the square coverslip on the slide. 4. Slowly lower the coverslip onto your sample. 5. Secure your slide to the stage with the stage clips.

HOW TO USE THE MICROSCOPE: HOW DO YOU FOCUS THE LENSES?  Microscope Video Microscope Video

HOW TO USE THE MICROSCOPE: HOW DO YOU FOCUS THE LENSES? 1. Start with the lowest power (smallest) objective lens first 2. Now, look through the eyepiece and turn the course focus until the image is sharp or in focus. 3. Turn the fine focus until the image is as sharp as possible. 4. Once the image is sharp with the low power lens, you should be able to turn to the next power lens and do minor adjustments with the FINE FOCUS KNOB ONLY. **NEVER LET THE LARGE OBJECTIVE LENS TOUCH THE SLIDE AND COVERSLIP**

When using the objective lenses and focusing knobs, **NEVER LET THE LARGE OBJECTIVE LENS TOUCH THE SLIDE AND COVERSLIP**

HOW TO USE THE MICROSCOPE: HOW SHOULD YOU STORE IT?  When you are finished with your microscope, you should: 1. Turn off light source 2. Unplug 3. Wrap cord around base 4. Put dust cover over it
