Intro to Theory of Evolution Standard: S7L5a. Explain that physical characteristics of organisms have changed over successive generations.

In the beginning… 1800s scientist speculated that organisms changing resulted in new species being created. Review: What is a species?

What is a species? A group of organisms that look alike and can breed together to produce fertile offspring Fertile means able to reproduce

What is evolution? The most general definition is…. – Change over time. Scientific definition: – Change in inherited characteristics over time successive generations

Question? What is a scientific theory? Is it an absolute fact, why or why not?

Earliest version of Theory of Evolution Lamarck (1809): his ERRONEOUS theory was based on the following: – Use and disuse of organs 1 – Inheritance of Acquired Traits 2

What is the modern theory of evolution? Founded by Charles Darwin Based on the following: – 1) Organisms produce more offspring than can survive - results in competition for limited resources

2) Variation exists within a population (species); these variations are inherited through genes

– 3) Environment forces the increased survival for those with beneficial traits; therefore beneficial traits have a higher frequency of surviving and reproducing Beneficial traits are more likely to passed on

Charles Darwin & The Start of the Theory of Evolution Standard: S7L5a. Explain that physical characteristics of organisms have changed over successive generations.

Who is Charles Darwin? Sailed from England on HMS Beagle to the Galapagos Islands

What did he do? He observed 13 species of finches on the islands. – He noticed all 13 species were similar, except for differences in body size, beak shape, and eating habits. – Observations lead him to reason that the finches must have to compete for food, and certain beaks helped survive on different islands

How did Darwin’s observations lead to him to hypothesize that physical characteristics of species have changed over time? Darwin observed that on islands with different environmental conditions you had finches that were similar but all had unique differences (variations). He used his observations to infer that the finches must have changed over time from a common ancestor.

How did Darwin share his research? He wrote a book titled “On The Origin of Species,” which was published in – Lead to the start of the modern day Theory of Evolution
