Causes of Revolution Vocabulary

Patriot A person who is loyal to their community and country. Patrick Henry was a patriot and supported colonial independence.

Loyalist/Tory A colonist during the revolution that was loyal to the king and England. The loyalists were driven out of Boston and sailed back to England.

Repeal To remove or cancel a colonial law. The Townshend Acts were repealed after the Boston Massacre.

Committees of Correspondence A letter writing campaign throughout the colonies to inform everyone about protests and boycotts. The Committees of Correspondence helped to inform all colonists of British Actions against them.

Declaratory Act A law passed by Parliament informing colonists that British law would be enforced in the colonies. The colonists ignored the Declaratory Acts thinking it wouldn’t affect them.

Tariff/tax A tax or a fee charged on imports. The Sugar Act and the Towshend Acts carried high tariffs.

Intolerable/Coercive Acts The laws imposed by England after the Boston Tea Party. The Intolerable Acts closed the port of Boston.

Writs of Assistance A search warrant for British officers to search colonial homes and businesses for smuggled goods. The Writs of Assistance invaded the privacy of colonists everywhere.

Revenue Money earned from work or products. The British govt. needed to generate revenue to pay off their war debt.

Impressment To force captured people to fight on the side of the opposing group. Many slaves were impressed into British service during the Revolution.
