Be Prepared. Be IB.

IB Mission Statement The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programs of international education and rigorous assessment. These programs encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

Hunt IB Students… Rank in the top 20 of their graduating class Are some of the best athletes in the school Have created new clubs for students to join Get accepted to their top college choice  Most commonly UNC-CH, NC State, ECU  But we also have students at West Point, Rice and Yale Universities

Student Selection Students will be selected to enter the IB Diploma Programme using a variety of methods  Personal desire  GPA in 9 th and 10 th grade  Explore/PLAN/PSAT scores  Completion of course prerequisites by end of sophomore year

IB Diploma Requirements Complete the full 2-year course of study  Courses in English, History, Biology, Math, Foreign Languages 4&5, Psychology and Theory of Knowledge Complete a Creativity, Action, Service project Complete an extended research essay Earn satisfactory scores on the IB exams taken May of the senior year

Reason #1: IB Courses Are Rigorous and College Level Exposure to the content of the IB curriculum better prepares students for coursework in the first year of college Says 2013 graduate Will Tulloss:  “Contrary to popular belief of a high school senior, you do use the information you are taught down the road somewhere. I know most of the material my professor is teaching because my teachers gave me such a solid foundation in that particular subject.” Students who may struggle through the IB course in high school often make an A in the college course

Comparisons of HS GPA and GPA after one year of college found  IB students on average had a GPA decline of 3.8 to 3.3  AP students dropped from 3.9 to 3.1  regular college prep students who lost a whole grade point, from 3.6 to 2.6

Reason #2:IB Students Learn to Think Globally The IB curriculum challenges students to think beyond our national borders in all subjects This helps students become globally minded citizens, more aware of how to interact and problem solve with people of all backgrounds Such abilities will enable our IB students to compete successfully for careers in our global society

Reason #3: IB Students Learn the Necessary Research Skills for College Success A 2013 survey of college students in VA found that IB students were more likely to indicate they: felt prepared for college-level research were proud of their research intended to conduct future research believed research skills were important to their continued success IB students complete research in every class along with an extended analytical essay on a topic of their choosing.

Reason #4:College Acceptance Rates are Higher for IB Students

31%

Class of 2014 Acceptance Letters 8 UNC-Chapel Hill 5 NC State 3 University of SC 3 ECU 1 ECU Honors College 2 Western Carolina 1 App State 1 U. of Alabama 1 U. of Georgia 1 Furman University 1 High Point University 1 Drexel University

Reason #5:IB Students Graduate College at Higher Rates

The Redesign should make you rethink what you know…. Students in 9 th and 10 th grade will often share classes with their cohort of IB candidates, making it easier to form study groups and collaborate with peers Juniors and seniors in the programme will take 6 IB courses a day  Classes will be 45 minutes, making information delivery more manageable Juniors and seniors will now be able to take 2 non- IB courses a year during 4 th block  Chorus, art, marching band, weightlifting, AVID, AP, and WCC dual enrollment courses will now be more accessible to diploma programme participants

"As a student at Duke University, I've encountered some of the nation's and world's brightest students who excel in various arenas such as the classroom or on the lacrosse field, in committee meetings with administrators or on their various executive positions in clubs around campus. While it's dangerous to compare yourself with anyone, I have found comfort in knowing that my academics and extracurriculars are equal to those of my fellow Duke classmates who earned the IB Diploma in New York City, in London, or in Shanghai. The skills and abilities I learned through pursuing the program truly aided in developing me both as a student and a citizen of the world. While some students may find the program intimidating or overbearing, I challenge them to seek to better themselves in a way that no other class or activity in Wilson County Schools can." Hannah McCracken – Class of 2012
