The Story of the “Fightin Phils Algebra” Back The regular season has just ended and the post season starts tomorrow!! Everyone in the Philly area is curious to see Charlie Manuel’s line-up. You are a sports journalist and it’s your job to figure out Charlie Manuel’s line-up. Charlie has not released this information during his press conference, so your job is to answer some questions about batting averages, earned run averages and slugging percentages. Back Slugging Percentage: 1) add up all official at bats (except sacrifices, hit by pitch, or walk) 2) Add up the total bases (how many bases a player reached in all the times he hit safely. 3) Divide total bases by official at bats 4)Round to the third decimal place.
Earned Run Average 1)Add up total number of innings pitched. 2)Add up the number of earned runs given up. If there are no errors in the inning, then all the runs are earned. If there are errors reconstruct the inning without the errors to see how many runs would have scored if the fielding had been perfect. 3)Multiply earned runs by 9 4)Divide by the total number of innings pitched 5)Round the number to the second decimal place Back Batting Average: 1) add up a player’s hits 2)Add up a players at bats ( a walk, hit by pitch, and fielder’s choice do not count as an at bat, but an out does) 3)Divide hits by at bats 4)Round number to third decimal place
