Types of War Vocabulary

Directions  For each of the following words – write down the definition provided and then create a visual to represent the particular type of war.

Total War  One or more combatants commit all of its resources to the war effort.  Economic, industrial, natural, material, educational and human resources are mobilized  Mobilize – to prepare or organize for trade  Examples: WWII

Civil War  Dispute as a result of radically different ideas about the direction, governmental system or composition of a country. Division can be ideological (about ideas), regional, political, economic or religious  Lack of a strong enough government to address the issues leading to division  Example: US Civil War

Revolutionary War  Usually sparked by a grass roots movement to overthrow what it perceives to be an oppressive authority. The authority could be foreign (from another country) or domestic (w/in the same country).  Grass Roots – movement that starts w/ ordinary citizens and expands.  Can also be Total Wars and/or Civil Wars  Often a result of Nationalist Movements (feeling of national pride amongst a group of people)  Example: U.S. Revolution

Guerrilla War  More of tactic that can be used in other types of war  Used when you don’t have the power to win in conventional war  Small groups of combatants use tactics like ambushes, sabotage, traps, etc…  Example: Vietnam War

Causes of War  Causes can be Social, Political, Economic, and Ideological  In your groups – brainstorm examples of each type of cause (use what you’ve learned in World and US History)  Be ready to share out what you’ve come up with
