Writing Types of writing (Genres) Labels Captions Non-fiction Fiction Key Stage 1 Assessments require to be familiar with a variety of genres.

Labels and lists Making use of sounds

Simple captions and sentences Explaining a message or a picture

Creative story writing end of year 1 Adapting a known story by creating own adventure and characters

End of year 2 invitation Familiarity with different writing stylistic features, punctuation, word variety and creativity

The writing process Copy writing Using sounds Using word banks Rehearsing ideas using drama Checking work - does it make sense? Editing work – how could I make this better?

Spelling Using initial sounds Building CVC words e.g. cat, dog, leg Building more complex CVC words e.g. sail, whale Using long vowel sounds e.g. ee, or ea. Look, cover, write, check.

Speaking and Listening Essential to developing good literacy skills. Good listening skills – looking at the person who is speaking. Expressing ideas – speaking audibly and clearly giving detail to the listener. Confidence is the key – encourage children to speak at home and enter into discussions.

Basic Skills across the curriculum Basic literacy skills are essential if children are to access other curriculum areas. Being able to listen, question and discuss will allow children to develop their understanding of history, geography and maths.
