Growth & Development La croissance et le développement physique D3

Objectives D1) understand that sexuality integrates many aspects of each of our lives D2) review the structure and the function of the male and female reproductive systems D3) describe fertilization, pregnancy and childbirth D4) recognize and evaluate different kinds of relationships

Fertilization is the union of the female egg and male sperm. It usually occurs in one of the fallopian tubes. Video – Brainpop Fetal Development

Each sperm and egg carries 23 chromosomes (parts of DNA) After the egg is fertilized, the chromosomes from the sperm and egg join to form 23 pairs of chromosomes. These 23 pairs are a blueprint for the development and appearance of a new life. The big question – is it a BOY or a GIRL? Video – Brainpop Gender Determination

Why are we all so different? Some of us look like our siblings and others don’t – WHY? Sperm and eggs carry a random mix of chromosomes These are inherited from previous generations. For most couples, there are over 8 billion possible combinations! Video – Brainpop Genetics

Twins! Video – Brainpop Twins

Fetal Development presentation

1. Give two reasons explaining why we are all different. 2. How many pairs of chromosomes are created after the egg is fertilized? 3. Where does fertilization usually begin?
