Government Ch 2.3: “The Critical Period” Objective: Today we will examine what the United States under the Articles of Confederation was like, and why there was such a great need for a new constitution after only 6 years. You will show me you understand this by explaining the specific problems found in the Articles.

The Revolutionary War lasted from 1775 until the final treaty in The “Second Continental Congress” had declared independence (July 4, 1776) The Congress also succeeded in drafting a new national constitution (designed for the newly independent nation), called the “Articles of Confederation”

The Articles of Confederation -first national government created after the Declaration of Independence. -An effort to respond to all the abuses of the British Government prior to the Revolution. -allowed for a weak central government, giving significant power to the individual states.

Due to a number of problems, including a rebellion in Massachusetts led by Daniel Shays, delegates met only 6 years after the Articles were written in an effort to change or replace the original articles

Now, in your groups, using the Government textbooks on your devices or any research technology you can find, within your groups, research, think about, and write down the meaning and the significance of the weakness on your notes sheet. You will share out with the class in 10 minutes.

#1. One vote for each state, regardless of size

#2 Congress was powerless to lay and collect taxes or duties.

#3 Congress was powerless to regulate foreign or interstate commerce.

#4 There was no executive branch to enforce the acts of Congress

#5 There was no national court system, only state courts.

#6 It took a 9/13ths majority (2/3rds of the states) to pass any law dealing with money,

#7 Amendments (changes) to the Articles could only be made with the consent of all 13 states.
