A preposition indicates the temporal, spatial or logical relationship of its object to the rest of the sentence.

We assailed the U.S.A. beside the border of Canada.

The bulwark besides the national military base is the only thing securing it from impending attacks.

There is a citadel right now within Iraq to protect our inactive soldiers.

Once you put your feet within the football pitch your fortitude must be in an all time high to last the whole game.
