COMMON OBJECTIVES OF WARTIME PROPAGANDA 1. Recruitment of Soldiers – either by draft or voluntary enlistment

2. Financing the War – War bonds or new taxes

3. Eliminating Dissent – unifying country behind the war effort Asking people to vote in favor of annexing Austria. Did not really matter, it was going to be done.

4. Conservation of Resources - food, oil, steel (things necessary in war)

5. Home Front – participation in organization to support war

COMMON TOOLS USED IN WARTIME PROPAGANDA 1. DEMONIZATION Enemy shown as evil or devil, murderous, and aggressive Enemy blamed for atrocities against women and children

EMOTIONAL APPEALS – Play on people’s emotions, especially fear, to promote war effort

NAME CALLING – label enemy to encourage hatred, create stereotypes, and demonize them “Japs”, “Huns” “Commies”

PATRIOTIC APPEALS – uses patriotic language and symbols to appeal to nation pride

HALF TRUTHS OR LIES- twists truth or includes some partial truth, blames the enemy for total responsibility of the war. Your own country shown as being totally “innocent”

CATCHY SLOGANS – uses memorable phrases to foster support “Remember the Alamo” “Remember Pearl Harbor”
