Writing to Advise Learning Objectives: 1)To know what is meant by the word ‘advise’. 2)To be able to write to advise.

So, what is advice? Definition: Guidance or recommendations about the best way to act. Definition: Guidance or recommendations about the best way to act.

Types of Advice - Personal- Professional What examples can you think of for each?

Features you should use: Make it personal (use the word ‘YOU’) Be honest, but be kind. Consider feelings. Use personal experience (“Once, when I was in that situation…”)

What advice would you give to this boy? My friend has stopped talking to me: he won’t sit by me, or tell me what I’ve done. I don’t know what I did or how to get him to be my friend again. What should I do?

Would you say? “It sounds like your friend is horrible – why do you even want him to be your friend anyway? If I was you, I’d dump him and find someone new. “This is a horrible situation to be in, so well done for asking for advice. You could try a few different things. You could give him some space for a few days, to cool down. You could try calling him on the phone, rather than trying to speak to him at school where there are lots of other people. Or, you could try and make some new friends: there are lots of lovely people out there! OR

Now it’s your turn… The problem: “No one at school likes me! I’m smarter than all of them and do better in tests so they are jealous. They call me names. I don’t want to do badly in school, but I’m tired of being called a geek. What can I do? The problem: “No one at school likes me! I’m smarter than all of them and do better in tests so they are jealous. They call me names. I don’t want to do badly in school, but I’m tired of being called a geek. What can I do? Write a letter to Lisa to give her advice.

Extension Come up with three example problems, and three sensible pieces of advise!

P A F Have a go at writing questions that could be used in your SATS paper. You must include the PURPOSE, AUDIENCE and FORMAT. Examples: 1.Write an article for a teen magazine advising people how to eat healthily. 2.Write a diary entry for a children’s creative writing blog imagining you have been transported to a desert island.

What writing styles have we covered so far? What techniques should you use for each?
