Computer anxiety Resource 15 || Presentation (see also Resource 16)

Individual activity Take 5 minutes to fill out the confronting anxieties scaffold Something that concerns me about technology is… Something positive that I can do about this is… See Resource 16 || Form 4.1

Defining computer anxiety An irrational emotional distress which is experienced by an individual when using or considering the use of computer technology (Igbaria & Iivari, 1995)

There are two different types of anxieties Trait-based - individuals are generally anxious in their personalities; and State-based - those that are related to specific situations. For most people, anxiety with computers is state-based, but occasionally it can be trait-based.

I used to scoff at the push for everyday use of computers in the class - but I see that my reluctance was more to do with my fear of technology rather than my perception of its usefulness and place in the classroom.

For teachers, anxiety can stem from: Beliefs that the use of technology will conflict with their capacity to teach in the way they feel most comfortable Beliefs that technology will restrict interpersonal contact Beliefs that technology exposes students to inaccurate and unverifiable information Concerns about social and ethical issues, such as children accessing inappropriate material or not getting enough physical activity Anxiety about change itself. All of us get comfortable doing things in a certain way, and technology can challenge us to change at an uncomfortable rate.

While all are valid concerns, for some teachers they become excuses that can prevent them from making progress with their ICT learning and integration.

Small group activity What makes you anxious about using technology yourself? What makes you anxious about using technology in your teaching?

Weekly challenge Identify one point during the week when you start to become anxious about using, or learning to use, technology. Metacognition in the classroom Talk to your students about what, if anything, makes them anxious about using, or learning to use, technology.

Three key things from today… What three points can you take from today’s discussion? You might base your thoughts around the metacognitive model…..
