2.15 THINKING ABOUT EFFECT

Sentence Work SIMPLE sentences: One independent clause and NO dependent clauses. It may contain many phrases. Example: The pear tree grows. Example: The pear tree grows very well in that corner. Write 4 simple sentences of your own telling me about your fall break. HERE ARE EXAMPLE SENTENCES: I built new shelves in my bathroom. I found the idea on Pinterest. I watched Alabama play Tennessee in Knoxville, TN. The game was a lot of fun.

Sentence Combining—Pg. 143 Sentence combining is the process of joining two simple sentences into one sentence. For example, look at the first sentence in Paragraph 7 from Passage 2 of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Dahl’s sentence is a COMPOUND sentence (two independent clauses). “Three days went by, and we had no luck.” If he wrote, “Three days went by. We had no luck” the effect would have been choppy and not very smooth. He could have used a semicolon: “Three days went by; we had no luck.”

Now you combine your sentences Combine your 4 sentences so that you now have TWO sentences. HERE IS MY EXAMPLE: I built new shelves with an idea that I found on Pinterest. I also went to Knoxville, TN, where I watched Alabama play Tennessee in football.

View the Film… Draw this chart on a blank sheet of paper. You will need to draw more than 3 rows. As we watch Scenes 10—12 (27:36—38:00), identify as many film techniques as you can, and put those in the left-hand column. Be sure to include SPECIFIC examples so that you can use them for your essay later. Cinematic Technique (specific example) Intended Effect

AFTER VIEWING CHARLIE FILM CLIPS…Pg. 144 What effect do you think Burton wants to create in the scene at home and in the scene in front of the factory? What choices does Burton make to create these effectss?

CHECK YOUR UNDERSTANDING Complete the “intended effect” column of this chart with an elbow partner. You will share your cinematic techniques, and you will discuss the intended effects. Then your partner will share his/her cinematic techniques, and you will discuss the intended effects. CINEMATIC TECHNIQUEINTENDED EFFECT
