How much text is needed? Posters are a visual medium to present a clear & simple message Minimize text! Use phrases rather than full sentences Use an active voice Avoid jargon Use a san serif font Text ~ pt Headings ~ pt Title ~ 34 – 42 pt (5cm tall)
Tips for the Construction Process Prepare ahead of time Experiment with the design Edit! Edit! Edit! Use figures and examples Get someone to proof-read your poster Be aware of the time & cost to print a poster

Let’s Practice Steps to Making a Poster in PPT Create a new PPT on one slide Layout: Format – slide layout “blank” Set the dimensions – Eg. 3X4ft = 36X48in (91.4X121.9cm) OR 2X3ft = 24X36in (61X91.4in) Create text: Insert – text box Use gridlines when arranging the text/images – view - gridlines
Presentation Tips Before the Conference: – Think of possible questions that people may ask & practice your answers – Prepare extra copies of your poster During the Conference: – Have a bottle of water on hand – Place copies of your poster in an accessible location – Have a contact sheet – Take the time to look at other posters
