Spring 2014 Assessments Secondary Principals February 5, 2014

Testing for Reclassification What assessment will be used? – ELA Periodic Assessment PA # 2 for grades 6-9 Who will be tested? – ALL English Learners that scored “Far Below Basic” and “Below Basic” on CST ELA – ALL English Learners who scored Basic or above in SY will “bank” their scores How will schools implement this? – Booklets and pre-slugged answer sheets will be delivered to schools by March 1 When will the test be given? – Testing window: March 1 to June 6

State Assessments-Spring 2014 State assessments CST (Apr. 3 – May 2) Grades 5, 8, 10 Science Grade 11 ELA and Math for EAP – EAP Writing (Feb. 3-28); Multiple Choice (May 19-30) SBAC Field Test (Apr. 1–May 16, except for Bell HS, Mar. 18-June 6) Grades 3-8, 11, sample of 9 and 10 CAHSEE (March 18-19; May 13-14) March is 10 th Grade Census May is make-up for grade 10; 11 th & 12 th graders who have not passed previously AP Tests (May 5–16)

High School Focus Group Recommendations: Administer CST/CMA Grade 10 Science before spring break (April 9 th ) Maintain SBFT window as is from April 1 – May 16 th (because conflicts exist before and after) Allow schools flexibility with EAP Multiple-Choice testing window Ship materials sooner to allow schools to start EAP MC testing on May 12

SBAC Field Test Training & Meetings Online web-based training – Feb. 24 to May 16 through Learning Zone Face to Face Meetings: 1.Feb. 19, Wednesday, 1:30-3:00 Cochran MS 2.Feb. 21, Friday, 1:30-3:00 Reseda HS (Register through Learning Zone– see Reference Guide REF-6225 for more details)

Training Resources and Updates Check in Principal’s brief Weekly updates sent to Testing Coordinators and Technology Coordinators – Be sure to designate point of contacts in the State Testing Program Requirements of the Principal’s Portal Weekly updates will also be posted on Student Testing & Assessment website

Readiness Survey

Testing Carts Priority for Rollout 1.High Schools, due to tight testing windows 2.Middle Schools 3.Schools with no technology readiness 4.Schools with some technology readiness

Timeline for Testing Carts Delivery to schools in March Headsets and keyboards included Through Technology point of contact, identify classroom(s) where carts will be used for testing (Classroom Selection Criteria Follow-up Survey)

Math Pathways for MS Common Core Math 6 Common Core Math 7 Common Core Math 8 Accelerated Common Core Math 7 Accelerated Common Core Algebra Using District policy that will have different measures to identify students who are ready for placement in Accelerated pathway Another decision point for acceleration opportunities at the high school level. All Students Regular Pathway Accelerated Path way Decision point: Some students in Accelerated Math 7 might not be ready to continue in the accelerated pathway. These students can continue with Introductory Algebra.

Middle School 6 th Grade Mathematics Assessment All 6 th grade students take a “readiness assessment” Purpose – determine placement through traditional math pathway or an accelerated math pathway Testing Window: March to April 1 Memo is forthcoming – process, training, timeline for implementation, data collection

Middle School 8 th Grade Mathematics Assessment Students enrolled in Algebra 1 Testing Window: May Online only Purpose – determine supports that might be needed in high school – determine students who may need to take Intermediate Algebra in High School instead of Geometry
