Emily Lam, Feb 2008 New Media 4 th Year Festival “TRISTAS” Public Presentation Strategy (PPS) By: Emily Lam

Emily Lam, Feb 2008 TRISTAS: Public Presentation Strategy 1. Audience Experience Project Concept Summary: Tristas is an interactive video installation that aims to bring out the long-term issues, such as the problem of distrust, that exist in the life of an adult-child of divorce. Through physical interaction within the space provided, users are able to virtually meet and explore the world of one of the victims, Tristas. In turn, users will get a sense of how these victims feel, such as emptiness and the longing for care & attention. Emily Lam, Feb 2008

TRISTAS: Public Presentation Strategy 1. Audience Experience Audience Experience: I entered a rectangular empty space with a projection in front of me. From the title of the project I assumed that the women I see in the projection is Tristas. She was sitting on a stool at the center of the screen, smiling at me politely. Another person entered the space from behind and Tristas immediately lost her smile. Tristas eventually stood up and walked out of the frame. The projection slowly faded into darkness. With nothing to see or hear, the other person quickly lost interest and decided to leave. I, on the other hand, wanted to see what would happen next. Tristas came back onto the screen. I began to shift myself around, starting with the left. I stayed there for a moment and Tristas’s gaze followed my position within the space. When I walked to the right side and stayed even longer, she got up from the stool and walked up to me. I wanted to know what would be next, but surprisingly, she chose to walk back to her seat and sat down. I walked quickly into the middle of the space and Tristas began to look uncomfortable. So, I decided to slow down in an attempt to “stabilize” her. Once Tristas returned to her smiling expression, I carefully walked closer to her. The projection began to zoom into Tristas’s face and graphics began to run across her image. There was a picture of a dollhouse, random people walking, rope tightening, girl drawing a maze, etc. I tried to connect these images and realized that it is a story about the girl that I have interacted with for the past five minutes. The story is likely to be about family issues and the struggle caused by a painful past. Emily Lam, Feb 2008
