Sport and its development of young people within schools Gabby Shirley Development Manager, Youth Sport Trust

PE and school sport support whole school improvement Physical & mental wellbeingCulture & ethosEngagement & motivationAchievement & attainment

A Clear Message

Aspirations For young people to succeed, they need to feel: That they have some control over their own destiny That they are valued by parents, peers, teachers and others A sense of belonging to a school/ community

Attainment Using PE & sport to improve outcomes in other areas of the curriculum Attainment is quantifiable……… examination results internal testing assessment

Employability Using PE & sport to help young people to ‘future proof’ themselves Enabling them to increase the range & quality of employability or life skills they develop through PE & sport

Why does this matter to schools? Because producing well motivated, well qualified and highly employable young people is the core business of schools Schools are measured on: Quality of teaching & learning Attainment & progress Secondary schools are also measured on: Destinations of their students after school

What support do we offer? Sky Sports Living for Sport Leadership Academy’s and Young Ambassadors Sainsbury’s School Games Intervention programmes - Education Endowment Foundation & Astra Zeneca Bespoke support to individual schools and clusters of schools Events - I&D days, Raising Achievement Conferences and YST Conference

Supporting young people What is it that your area of work can do to support young people to increase their; Attainment Aspirations Employability

How can you help? Adopt the language - aspirations, attainment & employability Think about opportunities to embed the principles in your area of work Make schools & other stakeholders aware of the opportunities available Think about whether, and how, you can contribute to the area of work
