Measuring Earthquakes
EARTHQUAKES.
Divergent Boundary spreads apart, or divides, making new ocean floor along mid ocean ridges. Convergent Boundary comes together. Ocean crust sinks.
EARTHQUAKES. DEFINITION: EARTHQUAKES DEFINITION: a violent trembling of the earth’s surface.
Energy Transformation in the form of Seismic Waves
Earth Science Fall  Earthquake- vibration of the earth’s crust Usually occur when rocks under stress suddenly shift along a fault.
Earthquakes and Volcanoes. Earthquakes An earthquake is the shaking and trembling that results from the sudden movement of part of the Earth’s crust.
Measuring Earthquakes By: Lily and Assul. Earthquakes  They can release a huge amount of energy or a very little amount  It depends on how much rock.
Energy Transformation in the form of Seismic Waves
EARTHQUAKES. Causes Sudden release of energy stored in rocks –Released as seismic waves Elastic Rebound Theory –Fault motion –Tectonic forces Also associated.

(All shook up.).  Usually happen near faults. (What are faults?)  Many faults are near plate boundaries, but they can be anywhere and everywhere.

Permian – 225 Million Years ago Triassic – 200 Million Years ago.
Earthquakes Sudden movement of surface when accumulated strain along opposing sides of a fault is suddenly released. Rock stretches and snaps.
Part 3 Seismometers and Seismograms A seismogram is the record produced by a seismometer (or seismograph).
Quiz/Review Get out a small piece of paper and put your name on it. When the bell rings, the quiz will begin.
 By the end of this unit, you should be able to:  Discuss stress and strain and their roles in earthquakes  Identify and describe the 3 types of faults.
Earthquakes. What causes Earthquakes? Earthquakes are sudden movements or vibrations in the earth’s crust. They are caused by faulting and folding activity.
QUIZ What is Seismology?
Earthquakes Part 2 Remember- earthquakes usually occur along faults in the earth’s lithosphere. (San Andreas Fault) - Normal Fault - Reverse Fault - Strike.

How do scientists know the structure of the Earth? Rock samples (direct evidence) Seismic waves (indirect evidence) –Vibrations that travel through Earth.
Measuring Earthquakes (5-2 Notes). Magnitude = a measure of an earthquake’s strength Based on seismic waves.
Earthquakes Standard 3d. Students know why and how earthquakes occur and the scales used to measure their intensity and magnitude.
What are Earthquakes? The shaking or trembling caused by the sudden release of energy Usually associated with faulting or breaking of rocks Continuing.
Earthquakes A sudden shaking of earth as rocks break along a fault or plate boundary A sudden shaking of earth as rocks break along a fault or plate boundary.
EARTHQUAKES. Rocks move along faults…  A fault is a fracture or break in the Earth’s lithosphere where blocks of rock move past each other.  Along some.
Key Terms: Seismology - the study of earthquakes Seismology - the study of earthquakes Seismologist - a scientist who studies earthquakes and seismic.
Earthquakes! Richter scale.  Developed in California at Cal Tech by Charles Richter in 1935  Based on the specific rocks found there  Only measures.

Earthquake Location & Size

3 Major Zones 1.Ring of Fire: Around the Pacific plate Type of Boundary: -Transform fault and convergent boundary

2.Eurasian- Melanesian: Collision between Asia and India. Type of boundary -Convergent

3.Mid-Atlantic Ridge: Rocks are pushed as a result of sea floor spreading. Type of boundary -Divergent

Earthquake Size Seismic waves are recorded by a Seismograph.

Charles Richter Measured the energy given off by an earthquake on his: Richter scale Energy given off by an Earthquake is its Magnitude Richter Scale Microquake: Under 2.5 Minor quake: 2.5 – 6 Moderate quake: 6 – 7 Major quake: 7 +

For each whole number that an earthquake reading goes up, 32x more energy is released. Ex. Difference between a 3 and 6. 23,768 times more energy released.

Modified Mercalli Measures the intensity of an earthquake. It is more subjective and is based on the amount of damage at a location. You can have different readings for the same earthquake in different cities. Scale goes from I to XII

Key to remember: Key to remember: An earthquake can only have one Magnitude but can have many intensities.
