Steps to understanding a map How to look at a map and find all the useful information you need!
STEP 1: Look at the Title The title of the map will tell you what kind information is being presented.
STEP 2:Examine the Key The key, or legend, lists the symbols used and identifies what it represents.
STEP 3:Check the Compass Rose The compass rose shows the cardinal directions: north, south, east and west. If there is no compass rose, you can usually assume that north is at the top and south is at the bottom of the map.
STEP 4:View the Scale A scale is used to indicate the real distance between places. Scales are usually shown in miles or kilometers.
