A very, very brief intro! Critical Literary Analysis Paper

CLAP quarter-by-quarter September: Browse themes and books Select two-three books for one theme Read 1 st novel during September and October (reading the shorter novel first is always a good idea) Read 2 nd novel during November, December, early January 3 rd quarter- Finalize book choice! Research, take notes, outline, and write first copy 4 th quarter- revise and complete final copy

Final product You will write an 8-10 page paper on a theme for one of the books you have read for outside reading. You will read two books (one each quarter) and select the one that you best understood/ find the most resources on/ feel comfortable with! You will need at least 5 solid, useful, and focused secondary sources (literary criticism) You may not use Sparknotes, Booknotes, etc for sources- these do not count and there are better ones out there!

Steps 1. Select titles 2. Read 3. Begin researching for theme and focus 4. Collect secondary sources and create working bibliography 5. Take notes on sources 6. Propose your topic 7. Write thesis 8. Outline, outline, outline!

Proficient Perusing Become familiar with a couple books Do this by: 1. Touching them- 1. Go ahead– judge them by the cover if you want to! 2. Pick them up – see how long they are. 3. Read the back cover! 2. Reading a couple pages. Does the style appeal to you? The English language can sound quite different depending on the time period a book was published or the time period that is being written about.

Things you will do today! 1. Peruse the pile of books 2. Look at the list - what theme(s) is this book under? 3. Read at least three pages from two texts 4. Submit to Miss. Cheikh: Write on an index card one-two books you might want to read (why?) and one book you definitely do not want to read! 5. Cross off books on your list, circle books to find out more about!
